Last weekend we were fortunate to perform at Soundwave Croatia, Soundcrash and New Bohemia’s annual festival on the shores of the Adriatic Sea in picturesque Petrcane. The whole weekend was superb, but playing on the Sunday night – both in the Beach Bar and, later, in Barbarella’s Discotheque for the afterparty – was an unforgettable experience.
As with other festivals we’ve played, we went mob-handed and did a Bedmo Disco Soundsystem show. That meant Coherent on the mic, alongside surprise guest B’Tol – a Bristol MC we’ve known (but never worked with) for a few years. We took to the decks in the Beach Bar – a bamboo-lined shack attached to a lifehouse, overlooking the Adriatic and a jam-packed dancing platform – after the Cinematic Orchestra had finished their sunset set on the main stage (the sound was being piped through to the Beach Bar). The reaction we got, from the very start, was amazing.
Whatever direction we took the show in, we were greeted by whooping, hollering, cheers and hands raised skywards. Some loons even climbed onto the lighting rig and started dancing high above the crowd! Coherent and B’Tol were in their element, exchanging verses, hosting magnificently and getting the crowd in the mood. For myself (Sell By Dave) and Five-Stylez, it was a real buzz. The sight of a rammed Beach Bar stage all signing along to the Turtles ‘Happy Together’ at the end will live long in the memory.
After a couple of hours to regroup, we opened up the afterparty at Barbarella’s Discotheque with an hour of goodtime grooves, including a load of our own edits, some forgotten classics, the odd bootleg and, of course, some disco and soul bangers. Once again, the reaction was fantastic. Thanks to all who came, danced and showed their appreciation.
Thanks, too, to the Soundwave Croatia organisers – Noah, Rob and the rest – for inviting us down to play. It was an honour – we look forward to returning to rock the party once again. Certainly, we lost count of the amount of props we got from random punters – always a good sign. The crew who headed out with us – all 30 of them – have all talked enthusiastically about returning next year. It’s a date!
