Bedmo Disco are a DJ/production outfit based in Bristol, England, comprising of crate-digging obsessives Sell By Dave (AKA music journalist, DJ and author Matt Anniss, pictured centre) , Five-Stylez (DJ, turntablist, producer and DJ equipment distributor Oli Ackroyd, right of shot) and Awon (producer, musician and tyre garage co-owner Gareth Morgan, left).
Sell By Dave and Five-Stylez have been DJing, promoting parties and making music together since 2007, when they released their first cheeky disco re-edits under the name Thumbs Aloft. Around that time, they also performed a number of shows with mic man Coherent as the Bedmo Disco Soundsystem. Awon joined the crew in 2010, and has been a permanent fixture ever since.
The Bedmo Disco moniker comes from the duo’s love for Bedminster (Bedmo for short), an area of Bristol not known for its passion for underground disco and boogie. Bedmo is the “least disco place in the world”. Bedmo Disco HQ – often referred to as North St Sound in tribute to a famous local street – is actually in Southville, but that’s just a suburb of Bedmo in reality.
Sell By Dave, Five-Stylez and Awon have vast experience as DJs, and record collections to match. Their collections take in everything from jazz, hip-hop, proper house, techno, garage, dubstep, drum and bass and broken beat to calypso, folk, rare rock, post-punk, ambient, Afrobeat, Latin grooves and, of course, all forms of disco, soul and funk past, present and future. As DJs, they’ve played all over the world (well, in Europe and Australia – think Berlin, Brighton, London, Sheffield, Sydney and Cardiff). They hold a monthly residency at the Big Chill Bristol and also host parties at other venues such as the Love Inn and The Plough.
Bedmo Disco are producers as well as DJs; prodigious re-editors of dusty old tunes, as well as creators of fresh new jams. Their tracks and edits have been played by a wide range of DJs, including Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Inkswel, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Outboxx, Todd Terje, the Idjut Boys, Futureboogie, Joey Negro, The Glimmers, Chris Duckenfield, Rune Lindbaek and many more.
Bedmo Disco are festival-friendly. They’re a regular fixture at Soundwave Croatia, and have previously appeared at the Big Chill, Bloom, BrisFest, Love Saves The Day and more. Their distinctive style blends underground obscurities with well-known party jams, and they’re flexible enough to play to the situation. Whether it’s a sweaty basement in Berlin, a beach bar in Croatia, or a festival stage in a muddy field, you can guarantee Bedmo Disco will get it right.
