MIX: AARON DAE’S BEDMOCAST

For the latest instalment of our ongoing BedmoCast mix series, we’re delighted to welcome Brooklyn producer AARON DAE into the fold. His mix, a delightfully fluid journey through starry deep house, disco-house and touchy-feely nu boogie, is sure to warm more than a few icy fingers and toes this autumn. We think it’s ace, and well worthy of your attention.

For the uninitiated, Aaron is a New York based DJ, producer and label owner. Alongside close friend J KRIV, he runs sneaky re-edit imprint Razor ‘N’ Tape. He’s also part of the rapidly expanding Deep & Disco family. He’s an excellent DJ with fine taste, as you’ll hear when you give BedmoCast 09 a listen.

Speaking of which, you can listen/download (alt+click on a Mac, something similar but different on a PC) to BEDMOCAST 09 here: BedmoCast 09_ AARON DAE

The tracklist for the mix is below. You’ll notice that it finishes with Only Children’s brilliant re-edit of “Falling In Love” by Surface, one of our favourite re-cuts of recent times. It dropped last week on Razor N Tape. It’s the label’s first digital-only outing and is currently being offered as an exclusive at Beaport. Buy it – it’s a wicked little EP.

MIX: CHRIS DUCKENFIELD LIVE AT GIRAFFE BOOGIE

We’ve got a rather special treat for the latest edition in our BedmoCast mix series – it’s only a live recording of CHRIS DUCKENFIELD’s set at Saturday night’s GIRAFFE BOOGIE party at Start The Bus!

Chris very kindly let us record his set, so we could capture some of the fun, excitement and downright debauchery of the party. We’ve been banging on about what a great DJ Chris is, especially when joining the dots between disco, boogie, house, funk and soul, and we reckon this recording captures that perfectly. Every time we listen, it brings back some hazy memories of the party and the characters that made it so special. Given that most of us were quite drunk, that’s no mean feat.

It’s not quite his whole set – sadly, for various reasons we only captured 1 hour 45 minutes of the two hours plus he played for – but it’s almost a complete record of a memorable set. You can listen and download on the Soundcloud player below.

While we remember, many thanks to all those who made it down and danced hard. Special shout outs to Deli G – local Bristol legend – who came and hung out with us and Chris, and of course Chris himself. As ever, he was a perfect gent and well and truly got the party started. Sell By Dave is still recovering from the shame of clearing the dancefloor (with a stone cold electrofunk classic, no less) before Chris came on. Ooops. There’s more pics of Chris in action from the night below.

NEWS: CHRIS DUCKENFIELD PLAYS GIRAFFE BOOGIE

This Saturday (October 13) sees the return of our semi-regular Giraffe Boogie party to Start The Bus in Bristol. It’s a very special instalment, because this time we’ll be joined by one of our favourite DJs, Sheffield selector Chris Duckenfield.

Chris has been a longtime friend of the family, and has made numerous appearances at various Bedmo Disco-related parties over the years. Many moons ago (2005, in fact), he played at the opening of Tricky Disco, a night run by our own Sell By Dave and Nick Harris (NRK Music). In the years that followed, he made three appearances at best before:, including two particularly memorable bashes in a tiny boozer called The Bank. Each time, Chris got the party started in magnificent style, joining the dots between deep house, tech-house, disco, boogie, broken beat, techno and more besides. In our humble opinion, there are few better party-starters out there.

For the uninitiated, Chris has a long and distinguished history and dance music. As a youngster, he was a key part of the Sheffield house scene. He worked behind the counter at the legendary Warp Records shop on Division Street. He was also part of genre-bending Warp-signed techno combo RAC, alongside pal and longtime production partner Richard Brown. The duo went on to enjoy a long career as SWAG, where they almost single-handedly invented tech-house and later put the swing back into house music with various releases on their own Odori, Primitive and Version labels.

Chris has history in the disco/boogie edits scene, too, being the man behind the superb Popular People’s Front series of sneaky 12″ singles. PPF seems to be on hiatus these days, while Chris concentrates his efforts on running All Ears Distribution. Although his production work has taken a backseat recently – no doubt due to the demands of parenthood and running All Ears with old Toko pal Alec Greenhough – he continues to DJ around the world. He’s a regular at the brilliant Electric Elephant festival in Croatia (held at the same site as Soundwave) and runs a fantastic bash in London called The Idiots are Winning.

Should you be unaware of his ace party-starting DJ skills, check out the two mixes below. One was recorded live on the Idiots are Winning boat party at Electric Elephant. The other is a recent homemade effort. Both are, of course, ace.

Support at the party comes from Bedmo Disco’s own trio of necksnapping idiots – Awon, Five-Stylez and Sell By Dave. Entrance is a couple of quid, and the party starts at 10pm.

NEWS: BEDMO DISCO ON BCFM

Last night Bedmo Disco were guests on BCFM’s “Fourth Floor” show, a weekly two-hour dispatch about underground club culture in Bristol. Presenter Paul Conroy grilled Awon, Five Stylez and Sell By Dave on the label, our music and the true meaning of Bedmo Disco. We also contributed two 20-minute minimixes (one each from Awon and Sell By Dave) packed with unreleased nuggets and forthcoming jams. As if that wasn’t enough, Paul also played tunes that have influenced us and that made us the grinchy, beardy types we are today.

You can listen to the show again, and download it, by heading over to the Fourth Floor page at BCFM

The show is in two parts; the first part features a minimix from Awon and some mic chat, the second a minimix from Sell By Dave and even more mic chat. Oh, and Awon’s thoughts on Girls Aloud.

MIX: SHAMBARBER v BOODIIOR WARM-UP

This Sunday sees the first ever Love Saves The Day festival in Castle Park, Bristol, and it looks like it could be a cracker. All the tickets have sold out, the line-up is a who’s who of party-minded DJ/live talent, and the weather looks promising. With everyone off work waving flags and cheering on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (or at least off work), it could be an absolute cracker.

Bedmo Disco will be making an appearance, alongside DJ/production partner Awon, in the bar/dressing up/madhouse that is the Shambarver v Boodior bar. We’re rather excited about the chance to spin some quality disco, electrofunk, boogie, house and the like for these guys – they’re renowned party-starters and regularly host bars and tents at festivals – so we decided to do a warm-up mix to get everyone in the mood.

It’s mixed by Sell By Dave and features a funtime mix of disco, boogie and electrofunk old and new, including house-tinted reworks, unreleased re-edits, party classics and unreleased label stuff. Hopefully you’ll all enjoy it. If you’re heading to Love Saves The Day, check us out – we’re playing from 2.30-4.30pm, right after Behling & Simpson’s special disco set. Whoop!

MIX: BEDMOCAST 07 – JIMMY THE TWIN

To celebrate the forthcoming release of Jimmy The Twin’s debut solo 12″ on Bedmo Disco Records, we’ve got the man himself to mix the latest installment of our ongoing BedmoCast series.

Predictably, it’s a bit of a doozy. In his smooth and immaculately soulful style, Jimmy flits between classic, string-drenched soul, rare grooves, simmering disco and slick, dubbed-out electrofunk. As well as a couple of tracks from his new EP for us, you’ll find a bunch of other exclusives – details in the tracklist below.

Anyways, if you want to get cracking (i.e listening), click here (right click and do stuff to download file): BedmoCast 07_ JIMMY THE TWIN

Jimmy’s 12″ for Bedmo Disco Records is called “505 Funk (with an 808 Boom)” and features a hot quartet of heavyweight re-edits made using vintage drum machines. If you you’ve yet to check out the clips or want to know more, check out the “505 Funk” release page on this very website. We obviously love it, but the feedback’s been great, too. Check out these words of wisdom (well, reactions):

“Love it. The version of “Bump & Hustle” is very deftly done and “Going Home” has a real nice Theo Parrish/DJ Nature vibe about it”Soft Rocks
“Just got round to checkin’ this and there are a couple of crackers on there. “Bump & Boom” is killer. Big ups James!”El Harvo (Futureboogie)
“Thanks for this. Liking “Going Home” best but “Bump & Boom” is also groovy” – Chris Duckenfield
“Really like this. Fave is “Going Home”. Been playing that loads of late.”Solid State, All Out War/All Out War Radio
“Bump and Boom” for me. Really like the combination of the vintage drum sounds and the funk” Dicky Trisco (Disco Deviance)
“Really loving James’ work on “Going Home”. The drums and synths work perfectly.” Leftside Wobble
“Moonspot Rock” and “Going Home” will get many plays from me fo’ sho” – Alkalino
“Nice EP. Really liking “Foolish” – Matty J (Tirk/The Pool London)
“HELL YES! Loving these A LOT!” – Drop Out Orchestra

So there you have it, some people with great taste love it. You should go away and buy it when it hits stores. Not because they say so, of course, but because it’s ace. Incidentally, another of Jimmy’s edits is featured on the forthcoming Retrospective All Stars comp on Retrospective Records (that’s Ruben and Ra’s label). That release is well worth checking also.

Anyways, back to Jimmy’s BedmoCast mix. Tracklist as follows…

1. Jeane Carne – “My Love Don’t Come Easy” (Soulpersona Edit) – Jeane Carne
2. Dave Allison – “Nice to Meet You” **forthcoming on Timewarp Records**

MIX: BEDMO DISCO ON PASSION RADIO BRISTOL 24/04/12

On Monday, our own Sell By Dave hosted the latest edition of Bedmo Disco Radio on Passion Radio Bristol. We’ve rescued the recording from the Passion archives and thought we’d share it with you. It’s a typically groovy two hour mix-up featuring a range of disco, electrofunk, P-funk, boogie, rare groove, soul, funk and deep house gems old and new. Excitingly, it also features previews of all four tracks from the forthcoming Awon & Bedmo Disco original production EP, “B-Funk”, two cuts from the excellent Jimmy The Twin edits EP we’re releasing in early May, and two yet-to-be-scheduled edits due to be released on our forthcoming sister label, Bedmo Digital.

It’s all mixed together in Sell By’s usual vaguely slick, ‘floor-friendly style, and we think it’s rather good – one of the best Bedmo Disco Radio sessions yet.

UPDATE: Bedmo Disco news belch!

There’s an awful lot happening at Bedmo Disco HQ right now, so we thought we’d update you on forthcoming attractions – new releases, DJ dates, radio appearances, that kind of thing.

BEDMO DISCO ON PASSION RADIO BRISTOL

After a few weeks away, we’re back on the virtual wireless today (Monday 23rd April) for our regular slot on Passion Radio Bristol. From 5pm BST (4pm UTC) we’ll be dropping our usual blend of great music old and new, flitting between genres and giving you a few sneaky previews of forthcoming label material. You can tune in online at http://www.passionradiobristol.co.uk.

We’re always keen to hear what you think, so during the show don’t forget to send us your tweets – shout-outs, requests, what you think of our choices etc. You can tweet at either @bedmodisco or @passionrb – we’ll be keeping tabs on both accounts.

BUY JIMMY THE TWIN’S 505 FUNK 12″

The next Bedmo Disco Records release comes from our pal JIMMY THE TWIN. It’s called “505 Funk (With An 808 Boom)” and features four colossal, heavyweight re-edits in Jimmy’s unique style – all featuring additional percussion from vintage drum machines. The feedback so far has been immense, so we’re hoping this one has legs and will do well. Before you ask, it will also be coming out digitally, but not for ages. Make Jimmy smile (and us, too) and buy a 12″ when it hits stores next Monday, April 30.

You can listen to clips of all four tracks by checking out the BEDM005 Jimmy The Twin release page on this very website, or by checking out the Soundcloud set here >>

Jimmy has recorded a special edition of our BEDMOCAST mix series, which we’ll be sticking online later this week. It’s ace, so keep ’em peeled for the upload!

AWON & BEDMO DISCO’S B-FUNK EP

The big news from Bedmo Disco HQ is that Awon and Bedmo Disco’s new EP of original productions is finally complete, mastered, and ready to be pressed onto heavyweight vinyl. It’s called B-Funk and will be out in early June on blue vinyl – just in time for the summer festival season.

The idea for the EP came about last autumn, when we proposed to Awon the idea of getting together and making some tracks. He was keen, so we spent two or three nights a week for a couple of months working on tunes. Awon played us some things he was working on and we lent a hand on some or offered advice on others. We also wrote a number of tunes together, and he played instruments/MPC on some others we’d been working on. The result is an EP that we’re really proud of. Hopefully other people will enjoy our handiwork, too.

On the A side you’ll find two synth-heavy boogie/electrofunk jams from Awon with a contemporary twist. Heavily inspired by old dubs of original ’80s synth-funk/electrofunk records, both “Startime” and “Good Lovin” revolve around insatiably nagging basslines, dubbed-out synth lines (many played on his trusty Roland JX-3P) and original drum machine percussion. Think Tiger and Woods making 1983 New York boogie dubs, and you’re close. Sort of. Either way, they’re ace.

On the B you’ll find two tracks from ourselves, Bedmo Disco. The first, “Illusion”, was brought to a recording session by Five-Stylez in almost complete form. A few tweaks and additional playing by Awon later, it was finished. We’ve been playing in relentlessly in our sets since then and it’s a bit of a beast – it rarely fails to get a good reaction. We call it “voodoo boogie”, ‘cos it’s chuggy, druggy, intoxicating and features a monster synth bassline. It’ll fit into house sets, and has a house kind of groove and sensibility, but it’s very much an electrofunk record. The other track of ours on the EP is “Boogie Down Dub”, a track originally recorded for a Big Chill Bristol promo video last year. We dusted it down, rearranged it and added a bunch of new percussive elements (mostly played in by Awon, for the record). According to one Bristol-based DJ, it sounds like Yello. We’re not so sure. It’s certainly synth heavy and again features a nagging bassline.

We’ll post preview clips of the whole EP on Soundcloud very soon. In the meantime, we’ll be busting out the masters on Passion Radio Bristol this afternoon.

DJ DATES UPDATE

Finally, we have a few DJ dates to give you a heads up about. Firstly, we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be playing the Shambarber tent/arena/area at Love Saves The Day, a brand new festival which will take place in Castle Park, Bristol, on Sunday, June 3, alongside Behling and Simpson (disco set) and many others. It should be a lot of fun.

Aside from that, you can also catch us upstairs at the Big Chill Bristol on Saturday May 5 and warming up for Cosmic Boogie at the same venue on Saturday June 2. We’ll also be having a special fifth birthday bash in June – stay tuned for more details. If all that wasn’t enough, we’ll also be at Soundwave Croatia from July 19-22, playing an Awon & Bedmo Disco set. Big tings!

MIX: BEDMOCAST 06 – NU BALANCE

We’ve got something a little bit special for you this week – a new BedmoCast episode mixed by Bristolian turntablist legend and original Aspects DJ Nu Balance. Flitting between original boogie, electrofunk and disco with a dash of fun and soul, it’s a 60-minute journey though Nu Balance’s almost endless crates. He also shows off some of the turntable skills – scratching, cutting, juggling – that earned him a fearsome reputation in his days with Bristol’s own Aspects crew.

Nu Balance is part of the extended Bedmo Disco family, and will be playing with Awon, Five-Stylez and Sell By Dave at The Big Chill Bristol on Saturday April 21st (that’s today, kids). We’ll be upstairs “In the Study”, mixing it up, tag team style, from 11pm-2am. Another mate of ours, Bristolian beatmaker/DJ/producer Scott Hendy (aka Boca 45) will be down his golden era hip-hop party downstairs. Awon and Five-Stylez will both be celebrating their birthdays. That’s sounds like an excuse for a party 😉

You can listen (or download, if you know how – check your browswer instructions etc) to Nu Balance’s fantastic BedmoCast mix by clicking on the link below. No tracklist, but suffice to say that every track is a killer – and there’s plenty of obscure and forgotten gems amongst the beats, grooves and boogie basslines.
