MIX: SHAMBARBER v BOODIIOR WARM-UP

This Sunday sees the first ever Love Saves The Day festival in Castle Park, Bristol, and it looks like it could be a cracker. All the tickets have sold out, the line-up is a who’s who of party-minded DJ/live talent, and the weather looks promising. With everyone off work waving flags and cheering on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (or at least off work), it could be an absolute cracker.

Bedmo Disco will be making an appearance, alongside DJ/production partner Awon, in the bar/dressing up/madhouse that is the Shambarver v Boodior bar. We’re rather excited about the chance to spin some quality disco, electrofunk, boogie, house and the like for these guys – they’re renowned party-starters and regularly host bars and tents at festivals – so we decided to do a warm-up mix to get everyone in the mood.

It’s mixed by Sell By Dave and features a funtime mix of disco, boogie and electrofunk old and new, including house-tinted reworks, unreleased re-edits, party classics and unreleased label stuff. Hopefully you’ll all enjoy it. If you’re heading to Love Saves The Day, check us out – we’re playing from 2.30-4.30pm, right after Behling & Simpson’s special disco set. Whoop!

NEWS: SECOND “B-FUNK” PREVIEW ONLINE

Yes, yes, yes! This morning we posted up the second preview of what you can expect from our fifth anniversary, blue vinyl 12″ – “B-Funk” by AWON and BEDMO DISCO. This is a ludicrously heavy chunk of voodoo boogie that we’re calling “ILLUSION“. It was produced by Five-Stylez for Bedmo Disco, with additional instruments by Awon. Sell By Dave mainly sat around going “this is good” and offering groove-based advice, some of which was rubbish.

Anyway, have a listen on the Soundcloud player above and let us know what you think. The EP will land later in June, so keep ’em peeled for more previews 🙂

NEWS: AWON & BEDMO DISCO 12″ ON THE WAY!

Regular Bedmo Disco Soundcloud followers may have noticed a new track appearing on our profile on Sunday night. It’s by our studio pal, DJ partner and all round sound geezer AWON. It’s called STARTIME and it’s one of four tracks on the next label release – a split 12″ featuring proper tracks (not edits, actual tracks) from AWON and BEDMO DISCO.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be posting up each of the tracks so you can have a listen and let us know what you think. All four cuts are heavily influenced by original ’80s electrofunk, boogie and electro dubs, as well as contemporary house (particularly in terms of structure and production techniques) and disco.

The 12″ is called “B-FUNK” – short for “BEDMO FUNK”, what we’ve decided to call our style (this week, at least) – and will be released in June, almost five years to the day since the release of our first ever re-edits 12″, BEDMO DISCO VOLUME 1. It’s being pressed up in limited quantities on blue vinyl and should hit stores around the 24th June.

We’re rather proud of the EP and hope you all like it. Initially, it was born out of a productive, two-month period of work at Awon’s home studio in Totterdown and our North St Sound base. We’d contacted Awon about playing some instruments on a particular track we wanted to make, and ended up spending the next two months working on tracks together. It was enough to inspire each of us to do more work on our own, too, and all four tracks feature various contributions from each of us. Awon played synths, guitars and added percussion to the Bedmo Disco tracks, while Sell By Dave and Five-Stylez offered advice on structure for Awon’s tracks. Five-Stylez brought a near complete track to the studio one night and wowed us all. That’s made it onto the EP, alongside a re-rub of a track produced by both Bedmo Disco DJs (but never released) at the tail end of 2010.

It all adds up to what we think is a strong EP. It was very enjoyable to make. You can listen to the first track from the EP, Awon’s “Startime”, above. More previews to come over the next couple of weeks 🙂

MIX: BEDMOCAST 07 – JIMMY THE TWIN

To celebrate the forthcoming release of Jimmy The Twin’s debut solo 12″ on Bedmo Disco Records, we’ve got the man himself to mix the latest installment of our ongoing BedmoCast series.

Predictably, it’s a bit of a doozy. In his smooth and immaculately soulful style, Jimmy flits between classic, string-drenched soul, rare grooves, simmering disco and slick, dubbed-out electrofunk. As well as a couple of tracks from his new EP for us, you’ll find a bunch of other exclusives – details in the tracklist below.

Anyways, if you want to get cracking (i.e listening), click here (right click and do stuff to download file): BedmoCast 07_ JIMMY THE TWIN

Jimmy’s 12″ for Bedmo Disco Records is called “505 Funk (with an 808 Boom)” and features a hot quartet of heavyweight re-edits made using vintage drum machines. If you you’ve yet to check out the clips or want to know more, check out the “505 Funk” release page on this very website. We obviously love it, but the feedback’s been great, too. Check out these words of wisdom (well, reactions):

“Love it. The version of “Bump & Hustle” is very deftly done and “Going Home” has a real nice Theo Parrish/DJ Nature vibe about it”Soft Rocks
“Just got round to checkin’ this and there are a couple of crackers on there. “Bump & Boom” is killer. Big ups James!”El Harvo (Futureboogie)
“Thanks for this. Liking “Going Home” best but “Bump & Boom” is also groovy” – Chris Duckenfield
“Really like this. Fave is “Going Home”. Been playing that loads of late.”Solid State, All Out War/All Out War Radio
“Bump and Boom” for me. Really like the combination of the vintage drum sounds and the funk” Dicky Trisco (Disco Deviance)
“Really loving James’ work on “Going Home”. The drums and synths work perfectly.” Leftside Wobble
“Moonspot Rock” and “Going Home” will get many plays from me fo’ sho” – Alkalino
“Nice EP. Really liking “Foolish” – Matty J (Tirk/The Pool London)
“HELL YES! Loving these A LOT!” – Drop Out Orchestra

So there you have it, some people with great taste love it. You should go away and buy it when it hits stores. Not because they say so, of course, but because it’s ace. Incidentally, another of Jimmy’s edits is featured on the forthcoming Retrospective All Stars comp on Retrospective Records (that’s Ruben and Ra’s label). That release is well worth checking also.

Anyways, back to Jimmy’s BedmoCast mix. Tracklist as follows…

1. Jeane Carne – “My Love Don’t Come Easy” (Soulpersona Edit) – Jeane Carne
2. Dave Allison – “Nice to Meet You” **forthcoming on Timewarp Records**

MUSIC: BEDMOCAST 04 – AWON’S SYNTH BOOGIE JAM

For the latest instalment of the BedmoCast series, we’ve enlisted Bedmo Disco studio member, label artist and regular DJ partner AWON. He’s given us a vintage mix recorded this time last year – a slick, ever-changing synth boogie jam that boasts a mix of classic 80s electrofunk flavas, from singalong anthems and bona fide bangers to little-known cuts, obscure dubs and slept-on tracks. We reckon it’s rather ace.

No tracklist this time around, but expect tracks from the likes of I-Level, Freez, Krystol, Donna Allen, Rene & Angela, D-Train and many, many more. Think fat synth basslines, twiddly LFO “funk buttion” action, vintage synths and gorgeous vocals. Plus, of course, a dash of slap bass!

Awon is a firm part of the Bedmo Disco family and has been working with us in the studio, adding his musical skills – keys, guitar, bass, wooden frog, MPC manipulating – to our productions. Two of his tracks – one of which we had a hand in constructing/arranging – will be featured on BEDM006, due for release later this spring, alongside two cuts from Bedmo Disco (which, erm, he also played on). More about that EP soon, so stay tuned for info. There will also be a solo Awon EP later in the year, too, which will probably drop in September or October.

Awon will be joining Sell By Dave and Five-Srylez behind the decks as part of a newly-expanded Bedmo Disco DJ crew at a number of events this year, including Soundwave Croatia, the Globe in Brighton (April 7) and the next label party at Big Chill Bristol (24 March).

Anyway, enough of that – give the mix a whirl and let us known what you think. We reckon it’s lush!

Bedmo DiscoMix: The Bedmo Disco Office Xmas Party

It’s been a while since we offered up a brand new mix to massage your lug’oles, so here’s a solo seesion – in the usual Bedmo Disco style – from Sell By Dave. We recently recorded a brand new joint Bedmo Disco mix for the Unity Agency, so expect that very soon, too.

So, this mix then. It’s loosely themed around the idea of an office Christmas party, though there are no dodgy Christmas songs. It’s basically the sort of thing we’d listen to if we actually had a Bedmo Disco Records office party around this time of year – think a fun and funky, floor-friendly blend of midtempo disco, electrofunk, boogie, house, soul and re-edits. Look out for a couple of brand new, previously unheard tracks from Bedmo Disco and Awon, due on the label in 2012, and some unreleased re-edits from Sell By Dave and Andrew Allsgood.
