NEWS: THREE MORE CHANCES TO DANCE (LIKE YOU MEAN IT)

bdp_009_BC_191214_webxl

The festive period is upon us, and that means a whole load more chances to “dance like you mean it”, as Bedmo Disco hit the Christmas and New Year period hard. This time, there are no headline guest DJs in tow – just Awon, Sell By Dave and Five-Stylez mixing up the good time grooves, obscure disco and boogie jams, unreleased re-edits and secret weapons.

Here’s what we’re up to over the next few weeks…

FRIDAY 19th DECEMBER – BEDMO DISCO PRESENTS CHRISTMAS PARTY @ BIG CHILL BRISTOL
Six hours of us mixing it up for your drinking and dancing pleasure. Expect a mixed-up, floor-friendly selection of gems from the depths of our ever-growing record collections. There’s free entry to this one all night long… get in!

WEDNESDAY 31st DECEMBER – COLSTON HALL NYE SWING DANCE (MAISON PARADISO COCKTAIL LOUNGE) @ COLSTON HALL, BRISTOL
This New Year’s Eve, we’ll be providing the music in The Lantern, the smaller venue attached to Colston Hall, as part of their “NYE Swing Dance”. We’ve teamed up with Maison Paradiso and will be keeping things lively in their room, dropping a party-friendly mix of disco, boogie, house, classics and occasional random drunken selections.

SATURDAY 3rd JANUARY, 2015 – BEDMO DISCO  @ BIG CHILL BRISTOL
To celebrate the start of our new Saturday night residency at Big Chill Bristol (the first Saturday of every month, kids) we’ll be pitching up at our favourite city centre watering hole-turned-intimate club space and playing lots of great music to get you going in 2015. New Year, new you… same old Bedmo Disco!

Join us at least one of these… we can guarantee great music and good times!

MUSIC: NEW BEDMO DISCO “WORKOUT” MIX FOR BODYWORK

bodywork_eddiec_poster

It’s been a while since the last Bedmo Disco mix, and even longer since Sell By Dave, Awon and Five-Stylez all contributed to one. Clearly, we needed an excuse, because last week we put one together for our friends at Bodywork Bristol. They uploaded it to their Soundcloud profile earlier today, and you can find it below.

There is, of course, a good reason they asked us to contribute to their “Workout” series (mixes inspired by working out, trips to the gym, that kind of thing). On Saturday (11th October) they’re hosting what looks to be a particularly tasty party at Basement 45 here in Bristol. The headliner is top notch Canadian selector Eddie C (Endless Flight, African Shakedown, Kolour, Crue-L, Common Edit… the list goes on). In support, you’ll find us playing back-to-back with Bodywork residents Hank Champagne and the Prince of Persia. These guys are top DJs with excellent record collections – as anyone who heard them play at Bedmo Disco Presents… a couple of months back will no doubt agree – so we’re particularly excited about sharing the ones-and-twos with them (and, of course, warming up for Eddie).

You can find out more about the party here and buy tickets (recommended) on Resident Advisor here.

As for the mix, we went in hard on the “workout” tip. It features plenty of samples from our little-known collection of ‘80s workout VHS tapes, plenty of original Italo-disco, some forgotten house gems, a smattering of boogie dubs, a slew of unreleased Bedmo Disco dubs and 30 minutes of shirts-off disco at the end. Oh, and Arnie. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

TONIGHT: THE BEDMO DISCO FESTIVE FREAK-OUT!

bd_bcb_281213_webXL

Bored of dry afternoons and evenings with your relatives? Keen to get out of the house to have a few cheeky drinks and a bit of a dance? If the answer to both of those is a resounding “YES, SAVE ME FROM THIS FESTIVE HELL” (or even just “yes, I fancy that”) then head down to Big Chill Bristol tonight (Saturday 28th December) from 9pm for the BEDMO DISCO FESTIVE FREAK-OUT!

You know what to expect: high grade underground disco, boogie, soul, funk, Italo and related goodness, with the Bedmo Disco crew joined for the first time by fellow Bristol-based disco DJs MAGIC GARY and JAMES DYER. They’re two of the main protagonists behind the always excellent TURBODISCO night at Dojo.

Oh, and as usual entrance is free throughout. Get involved, it should be another Christmas cracker! It’s got to be better than dreary festive TV and three day old sprouts!

NEWS: BEDMO DISCO GOES EAST

BD_Plough_May13_WebXL

Yep – a week on Saturday (18th May) we’re starting what we hope will be a series of regular shindigs at our favourite boozer, the excellent Plough Inn in Easton. It’s owned by some good friends of ours, and we couldn’t think of anywhere better to have a party.

It ticks all the boxes – great crowd of locals, nice soundsystem, decent back yard, and a love of a good party. What more could you want? It also marks our debut “eastside”, far away from our Bedminster roots. How times have changed, eh?

We’ll post more about this one next week, but the basics are on the poster. Come down – entry is free, booze is relatively cheap and the sounds will, of course, be righteous. Oh, and Deli G will be joining us again, playing on his “home patch” for the first time in ages. Bring it on!

PS – Check the dates page for updated news of forthcoming parties and appearances!

Tonight (Friday 8th February) we’re back at the Big Chill Bristol for another six-hour session from 9pm. You should know the drill by now – Awon, Five-Stylez and Sell By Dave mixing up ’80s boogie, electrofunk, freestyle, Italo-disco, proto-house, synth dubs, underground disco, Balearica and proper house.

Entrance is free, so there’s no excuse not to join us for a few beverages and a bit of a dance. If you’re lucky – and ask nicely – Awon might even give you a copy of his hot new mix CD, which is packed full of dope boogie jams and unreleased productions!

EVENT: BEDMO DISCO AT BIG CHILL BRISTOL, OCT 5th

It’s that time of the month again. Tonight (Friday 5th October), Bedmo Disco will be taking over the main room at Big Chill Bristol. From 9pm, Five-Stylez will be mixing it up in his own inimitable way, before Sell By Dave takes over a bit later for three hours of disco, electrofunk and house jams. If you’re lucky, Awon may also swing by to drop a few jams “back to Back” with Sell By.

Either way, it’s going to be mucho fun… good music, good people, good times. Free early doors, £2 later on (possibly, we’re not sure what their charging policy is these days).

Big Chill Bristol is on Small Street, off Corn Street, in Bristol city centre. But you knew that already.

Get the party started!

NEWS: BEDMO DISCO ON BCFM

Last night Bedmo Disco were guests on BCFM’s “Fourth Floor” show, a weekly two-hour dispatch about underground club culture in Bristol. Presenter Paul Conroy grilled Awon, Five Stylez and Sell By Dave on the label, our music and the true meaning of Bedmo Disco. We also contributed two 20-minute minimixes (one each from Awon and Sell By Dave) packed with unreleased nuggets and forthcoming jams. As if that wasn’t enough, Paul also played tunes that have influenced us and that made us the grinchy, beardy types we are today.

You can listen to the show again, and download it, by heading over to the Fourth Floor page at BCFM

The show is in two parts; the first part features a minimix from Awon and some mic chat, the second a minimix from Sell By Dave and even more mic chat. Oh, and Awon’s thoughts on Girls Aloud.

For the record, the tracklists for the minimixes are below…

Minimix 1 (mixed by AWON)

AWON – JOY AND PAIN
AWON – NO RETURN
AWON & FIVE-STYLEZ – COOKIES
AWON – BRING YOUR SWEET LOVIN’ BACK
FUNK DELUXE – THIS TIME [AWON RE-EDIT]
BEDMO DISCO – ILLUSION

Minimix 2 (mixed by SELL BY DAVE)

FIVE-STYLEZ – FREAK
BEDMO DISCO – I WANT YOUR DUB BACK [BEDMO DISCO DUB]
AWON – STARTIME
ROCCO RAIMUNDO – TURNS ME ON [BEDMO DISCO DUB]

MUSIC: BEDMOCAST 05 – FIVE-STYLEZ’ BOOGIE STYLES

Regular readers of this website will know that we like to give away BedmoCast mixes on a regular basis. They’ll also know that new DJ mixes from our own Five-Stylez are rarer than hen’s teeth, rocking horse excrement and Bristol City winning (this season, at least). You’ll be excited to note, then, that the latest BedmoCast episode has been mixed by… yep, Five-Stylez himself!

As he’s a bit of a digger and doesn’t like revealing some of his sources/finds, there’s no tracklist, but expect a range of boogie, electrofunk and synth-funk gems, including some unreleased tracks from Bedmo Disco (we won’t tell you which ones, just look out for some cheeky hip-hop vocal samples…), new bits from the label, classics from Instant Funk, and much, much more. 68 minutes of thrill-a-minute boogie goodness!

Click on the link below to listen. You can download it, too – check your browser instructions on how to download a “linked file”.

Bedmo Disco Mix: Five-Stylez’ Big Screen Favourites

The nights are drawing in, the recession is biting hard and a bunch of large foreheaded Old Etonians are running the country. Truly, things are bad. What you need is a large dose of heartwarming funk, soul and disco to get your toes tapping and hips moving. Things never seem quite so bad when you’ve got some boss tunes booming out of the speakers.

Here at Bedmo Disco HQ, we want to lift the mood of the nation – or at least those who pay attention to what we’re doing. To that end, our own turntable wizard Five-Stylez has put together a 50-minute nix of ‘big screen favourites’ – tracks he loves that appeared in films – for your downloading pleasure, at a recession-busting price (i.e zilch).

It was first aired on our recent Bedmo Disco Radio show on Hivemind.fm, and got favourable reactions. Hopefully you’ll like it too. It’s a fast-paced, fun-packed trawl through classic funk, soul, disco and boogie with a few surprises thrown in. It’s certainly a lot more entertaining than the news, Royal Wedding souvenirs and the Cornish weather. And it features ‘Self Preservation Society’. Job done.

Tracklist to come.
