NEWS: BEDMO DISCO ON BCFM

Last night Bedmo Disco were guests on BCFM’s “Fourth Floor” show, a weekly two-hour dispatch about underground club culture in Bristol. Presenter Paul Conroy grilled Awon, Five Stylez and Sell By Dave on the label, our music and the true meaning of Bedmo Disco. We also contributed two 20-minute minimixes (one each from Awon and Sell By Dave) packed with unreleased nuggets and forthcoming jams. As if that wasn’t enough, Paul also played tunes that have influenced us and that made us the grinchy, beardy types we are today.

You can listen to the show again, and download it, by heading over to the Fourth Floor page at BCFM

The show is in two parts; the first part features a minimix from Awon and some mic chat, the second a minimix from Sell By Dave and even more mic chat. Oh, and Awon’s thoughts on Girls Aloud.

For the record, the tracklists for the minimixes are below…

Minimix 1 (mixed by AWON)

AWON – JOY AND PAIN
AWON – NO RETURN
AWON & FIVE-STYLEZ – COOKIES
AWON – BRING YOUR SWEET LOVIN’ BACK
FUNK DELUXE – THIS TIME [AWON RE-EDIT]
BEDMO DISCO – ILLUSION

Minimix 2 (mixed by SELL BY DAVE)

MIX: SHAMBARBER v BOODIIOR WARM-UP

This Sunday sees the first ever Love Saves The Day festival in Castle Park, Bristol, and it looks like it could be a cracker. All the tickets have sold out, the line-up is a who’s who of party-minded DJ/live talent, and the weather looks promising. With everyone off work waving flags and cheering on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (or at least off work), it could be an absolute cracker.

Bedmo Disco will be making an appearance, alongside DJ/production partner Awon, in the bar/dressing up/madhouse that is the Shambarver v Boodior bar. We’re rather excited about the chance to spin some quality disco, electrofunk, boogie, house and the like for these guys – they’re renowned party-starters and regularly host bars and tents at festivals – so we decided to do a warm-up mix to get everyone in the mood.

It’s mixed by Sell By Dave and features a funtime mix of disco, boogie and electrofunk old and new, including house-tinted reworks, unreleased re-edits, party classics and unreleased label stuff. Hopefully you’ll all enjoy it. If you’re heading to Love Saves The Day, check us out – we’re playing from 2.30-4.30pm, right after Behling & Simpson’s special disco set. Whoop!

MIX: BEDMO DISCO ON PASSION RADIO BRISTOL 24/04/12

On Monday, our own Sell By Dave hosted the latest edition of Bedmo Disco Radio on Passion Radio Bristol. We’ve rescued the recording from the Passion archives and thought we’d share it with you. It’s a typically groovy two hour mix-up featuring a range of disco, electrofunk, P-funk, boogie, rare groove, soul, funk and deep house gems old and new. Excitingly, it also features previews of all four tracks from the forthcoming Awon & Bedmo Disco original production EP, “B-Funk”, two cuts from the excellent Jimmy The Twin edits EP we’re releasing in early May, and two yet-to-be-scheduled edits due to be released on our forthcoming sister label, Bedmo Digital.

It’s all mixed together in Sell By’s usual vaguely slick, ‘floor-friendly style, and we think it’s rather good – one of the best Bedmo Disco Radio sessions yet.

MUSIC: “Monkees in dub hell”

Yesterday’s news of the sad death of Monkee Davy Jones reminded us of our own tribute to the Prefab Four – Sell By Dave’s 2010 re-cut of “Pleasant Valley Sunday”.

He originally did it as part of a tailor-made re-score/alternative soundtrack to 60s horror film The Masque Of The Red Death, which he played at a Caravan Records party at TB2 in Bristol in November 2010. We can’t honestly remember what scene it was used to soundtrack, but the idea was that the Monkees’ cheery beat pop would offer a twisted alternative to the darkness and abject horror appearing on screen. High concept stuff. Incidentally, you can listen to The Masque Of The Red Death Re-Told here.

At the time of the ‘performance’ at TB2, one of our good friends Andy Clarkson – one of Bristol’s premier crate-diggers and a man with an absurdly good record collection – described the “Pleasant Valley Sunday” rub as “the Monkees in Dub Hell”. It’s quite, erm, trippy – at least in terms of the reverb and delay-laden sound. See what you think by giving it a listen/downloading it below.

RIP Davy.

MIX: WRONGSPEED 01

We like to try and bring you new and unusual mixes of weird and wonderful music as well as lovingly-crafted selections of heartwarming dancefloor fare. Our latest offering comes from Bedmo Disco’s own bearded grump and former teenage ambient type SELL BY DAVE. It’s called WRONGSPEED 01 and is made up entirely of records played at the wrong speed (hence the title). We’ll let him explain…

Last weekend I had the honour of playing at the Headrush & UFO night at Timbuk2 in Bristol, where I was asked to play a “non dancefloor set” (their words). I’ve done the same thing for them once before, where I had the pleasure of doing a back-to-back weird-out with Tom Govan of Vast & Bulbous and I Feel Space fame (one of the most interesting DJs in Bristol at the moment, in my opinion). This time round, I decided to leave the Serato set-up at home, dig deep in the recesses of the record collection and mostly play records at the wrong speed – either 45rpm cuts at 33, or 33/45 records at -8.

It was one of the most enjoyable sets I’ve played for sometime. Although making people dance and have a great time is why we all DJ, there’s something great about being given the opportunity to just go a bit crazy and play interesting, unusual and downright odd records with no intention of getting feet moving. I spent my formative years as a DJ playing ambient, dub, downtempo, IDM and electronica, and used to spend countless hours recording weird and wonderful mixtapes, where blending and tune selection were far more important than beatmatching. At Headrush & UFO I resorted to that style, picking out records to create a mood.

The feedback was good and I enjoyed it immensely, so I decided to record a “wrongspeed” mix based on that set. It’s not exactly the same, but it does contain some of the same records, albeit in a different order. Some tracks have been re-edited especially for the mix, while others are just given a new lease of life by being slowed down, dropped at 33 instead of 45 or pitched down to -10 (my Vestax decks go down that far, unlike Technics). Musically it’s dark and murky in parts and sounds like it was recorded in a cement mixer – or at least beamed down from outer space (lots of pops and crackles, for some reason) – but it gets a touch more cuddly and, erm, Balearic later on. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it – it’s certainly not a bog standard mix of house and disco.

Bedmo DiscoMix: The Bedmo Disco Office Xmas Party

It’s been a while since we offered up a brand new mix to massage your lug’oles, so here’s a solo seesion – in the usual Bedmo Disco style – from Sell By Dave. We recently recorded a brand new joint Bedmo Disco mix for the Unity Agency, so expect that very soon, too.

So, this mix then. It’s loosely themed around the idea of an office Christmas party, though there are no dodgy Christmas songs. It’s basically the sort of thing we’d listen to if we actually had a Bedmo Disco Records office party around this time of year – think a fun and funky, floor-friendly blend of midtempo disco, electrofunk, boogie, house, soul and re-edits. Look out for a couple of brand new, previously unheard tracks from Bedmo Disco and Awon, due on the label in 2012, and some unreleased re-edits from Sell By Dave and Andrew Allsgood.

Listen again: Bedmo Disco Radio 24/04/11 (mixed by Sell By Dave)

With Five-Stylez away getting on the piste (tee hee) in France, Sell By Dave took the opportunity to mix-up a distinctly summery bunch of tunes that included a clutch of forthcoming Bedmo Disco Records releases, slo-mo Balearic gems, needless re-edits, deep house, synthwave, afro grooves, electrofunk and, of course, disco.
